How to "erase" background

Dear Sirs, 

I think I have the simple thing to do. I have to mosaic the tiles of Polish topographic map (signed colors converted to RGB). There is popular problem with the white stripes on the tile edges. How to make the white color (background) transparent - the option is unavailable in mosaic tool?
