Unable to import a KML file that was exported from Google My Maps
Hi All,
I'm trying to move my maps from Google My Maps to Avenza, but I am not able to import the KML file into Avenza.
Here's what I am doing
- In Google My Maps, select "Export to KML/KMZ" in the pulldown for my map
- The pulldown offers me the choice of exporting the whole map, or only a single layer. I select a single layer.
- I check "Export as KML instead of KMZ. Does not support all icons."
- I click the "Download" button.
- I transfer the KML file to my phone. I have a Google Pixel 4A running Android 13.
- I launch Avenza on my phone. I am already logged in.
- I click "+" at the bottom of the screen (I have nothing in Avenza yet - my library is empty)
- I click "Download or import a map"
- I click "Cloud storage or device"
- I navigate to the Download folder on my phone and then click on the ".kml" file that Google provided me.
- And Avenza says "Unsupported file type."
In fact there are no apps on my phone the can open the KML file.
Any suggestions? Someone else had this problem several years ago, on the same phone but no solution was posted.
Thanks,
Dave C
PS: there are no appropriate options in the "Topic" pulldown in this form, and leaving the pulldown blank is not an option, so the selected option ("Feature Request) is meaningless. Might want to at least add an "Other" option.
