Starting with the Adobe 2022 compatibility releases for both MAPublisher and Geographic Imager coming in late 2021, we will no longer be offering compatibility for Adobe CS6 on both Windows and macOS. Starting with this release as well, we will also no longer be offering compatibility for the Windows 7 operating system (originally released in 2009).
Adobe CS6 was originally released in 2012, and Avenza has ensured that MAPublisher® for Adobe® Illustrator® and Geographic Imager® for Adobe Photoshop® were compatible with each release. To date, our development unit has been held back in leveraging new Adobe functionality in our tools as a lot of time and resources have been redirected towards maintaining compatibility and developing workarounds for CS6. By discontinuing this support, we will be better able to increase our compatibility with Adobe’s new functionality and improve the user experience all around. Some of this new functionality includes the new M1 Processor support, rotated canvases, as well as lots of other new features.
The decision to discontinue compatibility with Adobe CS6 is also reinforced by macOS no longer being officially compatible since OS X 10.11 (released in September 2015), and with CS6 no longer being able to even run on OS X 10.15 (released in October 2019). This means that users on Mac using CS6 are using older versions of Mac that we are not necessarily compatible with (our latest release - 10.8 - is compatible with macOS 11 and 10.15).
In addition to macOS discontinuing support for CS6, Adobe themselves discontinued their assisted technical support on May 31, 2017, for all issues relating to downloading, deploying, and installing CS6. Based on our current analytics (January 1, 2021, to present) we have 10% of users using CS6 with MAPublisher and 10% for Geographic Imager.
Those users who have MAPublisher or Geographic Imager versions prior to this release will still be able to use CS6 and/or Windows 7 and will continue to be able to access Customer Support, based on the current Product Life Cycle here. Those using CS6 and/or Windows 7 however will only be able to receive technical support until September 1, 2024
If you are interested in continuing to use MAPublisher or Geographic Imager moving forward, you will need to subscribe to Adobe’s Creative Cloud platform. More information about those subscriptions can be found here.
