ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Web Service

Requirements

A registered ArcGIS Online account is required. You can get one here.

An internet connection is required to connect to ArcGIS Online.

Using ArcGIS Online Import

To import vector data from ArcGIS Online, click the Import or Multiple Data Import button on the MAPublisher toolbar, then choose ArcGIS Online from the Format drop-down.

Click the Click to login link and sign-in with your ArcGIS Online credentials. When successfully signed in, your username will appear in the Import dialog box.

 

User Portal

Once signed in, click the <Click to select dataset> link. In the User Portal dialog box, all of the account's datasets are listed. Currently, only Feature Layers, Map Image Layers, and Tile Layers are supported. Other types of data including shapefiles and geodatabases are not shown and need to be converted to a Feature Layer in ArcGIS Online before it can be imported into MAPublisher.

Optionally, use the Filter to quickly search for layers based on title or tag.

Select a layer and click Open or double-click a layer to begin the import process. Depending on the type of layer, the import options may differ slightly.

 

Import From Feature Layer

When opening Feature Layers, the Import From Feature Layer dialog box appears that allows you to choose specific layers, features, and attributes to import. Click a checkbox in the Import column to designate a layer for import. The coordinate system of the layer is listed below the Layers table. To change the destination coordinate system, click the coordinate system link, and select a new one. On import, the data is transformed to the selected coordinate system.  The Features and Attributes column displays how many features or attributes are being imported. When "All" is displayed, that means all features or attributes will be imported. To only select certain features or attributes to import, click the Edit Query button. In the Feature Layer Query dialog box, choose to Include all features or Include only features meeting the following criteria. The latter option allows you to enter an SQL expression to select a subset of features. A basic query expression has several parts and follows a SELECT * FROM <layer name> WHERE clause, which is provided for you. A general query expression like <Attribute or Field> <Operator> <Value or String>  is entered into the text box after the clause.

For compound queries, the following query expression form can be used <Attribute or Field> <Operator> <Value or String> <Connector> <Attribute or Field> <Operator> <Value or String>. Optionally, parentheses can be used to define order of operations.

Strings must be enclosed within single quotes (e.g. ADMIN_NAME = 'Singapore').

Validation may not be available for some layers.

 

Import From Map Image Layer and Import From Tile Layer

When opening Map Image Layers or Tile Layers, the Import From Image Layer or Import From Tile Layer dialog box appears, respectively, and allows you to choose a specific image area to import. The allowable maximum image size to import is determined by the maximum width set by the layer.

Click the Select Area button to specify a smaller area to import. Drawing a marquee box in the map preview is the quickest and simplest method to select an area. In the preview image, click and drag to draw to select an area—the image immediately crops to the select area. The crop area can be only as large as the extent of the image and only one crop area can be defined at a time. Click Undo to undo the previous selection. Click Reset to Original Extents to return to the original extents of the layer specified by the service.

Using ArcGIS Web Service

To import data from an ArcGIS web service, click the Import or Multiple Data Import button on the MAPublisher toolbar, then choose ArcGIS Web Service from the Format drop-down. To select a dataset for import, click the <Click to select dataset> link.

In the Connect to ArcGIS Web Service dialog box, enter an ArcGIS web service URL. When an ArcGIS web service URL is entered, MAPublisher will attempt to validate the URL and identify the type of layer to import. Previously imported services are saved in the Service URL drop-down.

You can find service URLs directly from ArcGIS Online. Go to My Content, click the drop-down menu arrow of a layer in the listing, and choose View item details. On the right-side column, the URL is displayed and can be copied.

Accessing an ArcGIS web service differs slightly because it can initially be accessed by anyone with the URL. However, depending on web service permissions, it may be public where anyone can access the service or maybe private, and only authenticated users may access the service. Depending on the service permissions, you may be required to sign-in with the appropriate account credentials to gain access. The Status displays whether you are logged in, not logged in, or if the service is valid, but the server and login status is unknown (this generally happens the first time accessing a service). Below is a summary of Status messages and their description. 

Status	Description
Unknown server; login status unknown.	Although the service URL is valid, it may be of unknown origin. You may also need to sign into ArcGIS with your account credentials to access the data.
Logged in as <user>.	You're logged into the account displayed.
Not logged in.	You're currently not logged in.
Login not required.	You're not required to login.

 

 Because some ArcGIS web service URLs can be public, there is no sign-in option.

Depending on the type of ArcGIS web service, the import options may differ slightly but are similar to importing an ArcGIS Online layer (see above).
